The Winter Wonders holiday light show featuring more than 1 million LED lights through a 1.5-mile route is coming back to Boerner Botanical Gardens in Whitnall Park. Lighted animations celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s and Three Kings Day. The walking is easy and handicap friendly. We walked through it in an hour or so but you can spend a lot more time if you are reading all the messages, take great pix or watching some of the performances. Parking was not bad but I can see it getting tougher if it gets crowded. We used a Groupon and got in for only $10/person. ![]() Make sure your cameras and phones are charged, you will be taking tons of photos. The crowd was not bad and the displays were really amazing. The weather was threatening all day and did leave the grounds a bit soggy but while we were there the night air was perfect. We lucked out by going on opening night with friends. Thanks to my lovely bride for discovering the China Lights event. I hope they can extend the event so more people can visit it. I wanted to buy one but the line was too long so I just watched him.ĭefinitely worth the visit for young and old. They had a person making beautiful candied dragon and phoenix for $5.00. There are food vendors and merchandises to sell. There are 3 stage performances every evening. Panda lanterns, giraffes lanterns, Nemo lanterns, etc.all are beautiful. There is a huge dragon that everyone loved taking pictures. It was beautiful so we did not mind being stuck in "slow moving human traffic." Everyone else seemed to enjoy it as well and everyone was very courteous. We were in the "Bog Walk" which is a narrow bridge to see the "Lotus Lantern Gallery" for 10 minutes due to the crowd. ![]() Make sure you give yourself ample time to view all the displays due to the huge crowd. I had purchased my tickets on line and avoided the lines at the gate. They ran out of parking so there is a shuttle bus service. The event is bigger than expected so it is crowded. You can see it in the daylight but definitely prettier at night. It's not the garden at Versailles, but it's definitely a Four Star experience.īoerner Botanical Gardens has a special Chinese lantern display from October 1st to October 30th at night. All in all, a very pleasant late afternoon walk. I wondered where the bees were, they must have bees nearby to pollinate all these plants, and sure enough, right at the end of our journey, we found the beehives. We got to sit on a few pretty benches and just soak up the scenery in peace. There were very few people there, so it seemed like we mostly had the place all to ourselves. The disappearing creek was still running and it's a great place to explore on both sides, seeking out where the water comes from and where it goes, walking among some very unusual trees with copper-colored peeling bark. Still, it was quite beautiful and interesting to see how they put their beds to sleep and prepare for winter. Looking for a place to take a nice walk and see some things we usually don't see in our walks around our city parks, we chose to go to Boerner even though we knew it was the end of the season and not everything would be in bloom. ![]()
